Reporting directly to the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors and functionally to the Chief Financial Officer, the Internal Audit Director will be responsible for providing leadership as well as management, planning and execution of all internal audit activities for Armstrong World Industries, Inc. (AWI). The Internal Audit Director will provide the Board of Directors and senior management with independent and objective assurance, designed to add value and improve operations by evaluating the effectiveness of governance, risk management and continuous assessment of internal controls.
Key Responsibilities of the Internal Audit Director:
• Proactively establish strong relationships with all key stakeholders, including regional and corporate operations and finance management, as well as external auditors
• Understanding, anticipating and balancing the competing objectives of stakeholders, serving as an integrated business and external audit partner
• Participating in Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) program to ensure appropriate levels of risk across the organization
• Preparing the annual Audit Plan and presenting it to Audit Committee for approval
• Overseeing the development, planning, and execution of financial, operational, IT, and compliance risk-based audit and advisory services across AWI’s portfolio
• Leading the Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) program and internal controls testing and collaborating with management and external auditors to review scope, testing approach and results
• Establishing direction and coordinating Internal Audit activities with external auditors to ensure proper audit coverage, eliminate duplicate efforts, and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of audit activities
• Continuously improving the risk-based internal audit methodology through identifying control and operational weaknesses and working with the appropriate business process owners to address these weaknesses
• Monitoring and reporting on the timeliness of management’s completion of action plans to address previously identified internal audit methodology weaknesses
• Ensuring high-quality audits are completed on time and meet Institute of Internal Auditors and department standards for performance
• Presenting audit results to the executive leadership team and providing input to the CEO and CFO in preparation for Audit Committee meetings
• Identifying and presenting opportunities for professional development of Internal Audit staff
• Developing, monitoring and ensuring the achievement of the Internal Audit department budget
• Providing leadership and direction to co-sourced auditors
• Undertaking other tasks or special projects when required by management (i.e. resourcing, group training, quality assurance reviews, etc.)
• Traveling up 20% depending upon annual audit plan
Required Qualifications for the Internal Audit Director:
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or another related field
• 10+ years of experience performing risk assessments and risk-based operational, financial and compliance audits of key business processes
• Prior management experience
• Strong understanding of and ability to develop SOX plans and remediation efforts, designing and executing testing strategies, and developing documentation
• Strong Board of Directors presence
• Strong leadership skills
• Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
Desired Qualifications for the Internal Audit Director:
• Prior experience in the manufacturing industry
• Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree
• Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) certification
• Knowledge of SAP and governance, risk management, and compliance (GRC) software
