Position Overview:
Global Licensing and Retail is currently seeking a Director of Retail Merchandising. In this role, the ideal candidate will develop and implement department objectives, brand strategies and visual presentation within each category, while simultaneously managing the needs of the customers and fostering new business opportunities. Additionally, this role is responsible for achieving financial and strategic goals for all categories as well as successful team management.
Function Specific Activities:
Product Development and Buying:
• Analyze the market to forecast trends and provide overall strategic direction for merchandise
• Direct the planning and execution of the merchandise strategy to meet the needs of our consumers including the selection, approval and development of ideal assortments
• Direct private label, store-only product development process from concept through sourcing, costing, production and delivery to achieve results
• Develop annual budgets, revenue goals, stock turn goals
• Manage category of business to deliver sales and margin results
• Ensure open-to-buys are consistent with achieving product category goals
• Manage the cost of sales by implementing liquidation strategies and identifying areas for increased efficiencies and cost reductions
• Direct the communication between operators and the buying team for the purpose of maximizing business
Planning and Procurement:
• Direct Open-to-Buy and approve monthly planning team category forecasts
• Develop long range sales, dollars per square foot/linear foot and gross margin location plans consistent with the corporate objectives
• Develop seasonal plans with all financial elements by store
• Drive store profitability and productivity in an entrepreneurial environment
• Communicate with the store teams including store visits and conference calls
• Collaborate with store teams to optimize volume by location in conjunction with the merchandise initiatives and strategies
• Maximize forecasting, inventory, allocation, replenishment processes
• Provide leadership and direction for all aspects of supply chain related systems, processes and procedures
• Ensure optimal balance of inventory between the stores and the distribution center to meet the sales plans
• Review product mix and presentation levels to drive business results
• Manage the distribution and planning processes through the supervision, training and development of the Planners
• Work with Finance to develop top level financial plans that maximize opportunities, ensure buyer level plan ties to top line plan
• Provide analytical support to help identify opportunities to improve the business
• Review forecasts with the buying teams and lead monthly forecast meetings
• Lead weekly meetings with team to communicate strategy, review business and coordinate priorities
• Visit local stores and communicate with the field organization regarding merchandise concerns and opportunities for future initiatives
Merchandise Space Planning and Design:
• Provide input to the design and creation of exciting and memorable retail environments
• Identify any needed modifications to physical space and develop business brief for fixture design and layout as well as for any renovations or new store designs
• Partner with design on development and procurement of fixtures and with Facilities development of new stores.
• Coordinate, with Stores, the installation or re-layout of fixtures
• Analysis of fixture capacity/volume, quantity, type and design to drive sales through effective merchandising
• Direct creation and execution of adjacency plans, fixture plans and store experiential design
• Lead development, execution and compliance of location plan-o-grams
• Directs conceptualization and floor plan designs for merchandising a product presentation.
• Directs the development of key merchandise presentation strategies and guidelines for product presentations that align with brand objectives
• Space productivity analytics development to increase GP$ and improve turn
Visual Merchandising:
• Develops seasonal promotional calendar to driver brand and business results. Partners with marketing to develop supporting communications materials.
• Support the merchandising goals and objectives by planning floor sets and unique visuals that enhance not only the look of the store but also each category and SKU
• Develops, tests and executes visual plans and programs
• Partner in the sourcing of props and fixtures that elevate the store and enhance the brands
Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in business with an emphasis in retail merchandising or marketing preferred or similar field of study
• 10+ years of experience leading and managing a team in a retail environment
• 5+ years of experience strategizing, running, analyzing, and improving supplier and product strategies
• Experience understanding and analyzing financial concepts and data to identify opportunities and risks of change on category and suppliers.
• Ability to influence leadership cross functionally to develop, roll out and continuously improve supplier partnerships
• Exceptional negotiation and interpersonal skills that can be leveraged in developing supplier and vendor relationships
