Job Summary:
The Director of Marketing is accountable for developing and directing the implementation of strategies to establish and grow consumer awareness and demand for Newell Brands Technical Apparel and Gear products in U.S. and foreign markets, including strategies for brand image and brand equity management, consumer advertising, and public and media relations. The Director of Marketing oversees development and execution of annual plans for advertising, promotions, sponsorships, public and media relations and brand marketing.
The Director of Marketing manages a diverse group of both managers and staff positions and understands what it takes to develop a cohesive and collaborative team. The incumbent has a thorough grasp of the global outdoor specialty market. The Director of Marketing is comfortable working with numbers in an analytical realm as the incumbent will extract and distribute useful information from those numbers throughout the organization.
The Director of Marketing infuses additional strategic direction to NBTA’s marketing plans and product development. The incumbent instills “instant credibility” in the eyes of the organization and partners, from the executive leadership team to the sales representative level.
Job Duties:
• Collaborate with other members of executive management in the development of overall company strategies and policies, and to identify goals for brand identity, brand awareness building, product, collection and season positioning, and overall company image and story in various markets. Provide marketing expertise to major business decisions, advising and recommending strategic business responses to such matters as changing conditions in the marketplace, consumer trends, and development of potential new markets, acquisitions, and new creative, merchandising, and product concepts.
• Develop strategies and marketing plans to manage brand equity in line with NBTA’s annual and long range business goals. Identify, assess and recommend actions in response to threats to Marketing position, and identify opportunities to strengthen consumer and distributor perception of the Marmot Marketing and increase market share.
• Collaborate with the Sales and Design and Product Development leadership in the creation of new, market-right product concepts. Direct external market research efforts, assess market trends and product performance, and identify risks and opportunities.
• Develop advertising plans and budgets and direct the conceptual development, design, and execution of advertising program strategies and placement.
• Select, develop, motivate and provide leadership to marketing department members in a way that facilitates creation of a collaborative environment, ensures that appropriate skills exist within the organization, enables staff members to fulfill the department’s operating objectives, and supports NBTA’s mission and core values.
• Deploy and manage department, cross-functional projects, and external resources to ensure fulfillment of department goals, functional objectives, project plans and procedures in keeping with company profitability goals. Establish and effectively manage department and program budgets.
• Plan and oversee development of visual tools, including product packaging design, point of purchase and event print, video and promotional materials and fixtures, sales support tools, press kits, trade and consumer print and electronic catalogues and corporate identity.
• Develop strategies and provide direction to the Senior Manager - Communications in the execution of public and press relations objectives to reinforce company and brand image in the consumer and retail communities, and to promote positive media coverage.
• Develop and manage implementation of NBTA’s sponsorship program strategy, policy and guidelines. Approve sponsorship contracts and oversee management of the program to ensure creation of an effective network of diverse, devoted ambassadors for our brands and associated products.
• Create monthly reports to communicate marketing performance, competitive information, and product information to the company.
• Communicate regularly to provide information on specific issues, marketing, product information, and general economic and business issues.
• Knowledge of PC-based Word, Excel and Outlook.
• Proficient with use of company’s Intranet to analyze account business and territory sales.
Role Complexity
The Director of Marketing is challenged to develop a creative marketing vision and direct the implementation of strategic and tactical plans that will maintain or grow our brand positions in each consumer segment and geographical market in a highly competitive business environment. This position must balance efforts to increase brand equity and consumer demand with NBTA’s mission and core values, business strategies, stated profitability goals, and the heeds and capabilities of production and sales functions. The Director of Marketing operates within broad functional policies and strategic objectives. Decisions of major importance are subject to review and approval by the SVP/General Manager of NBTA, with consensus among members of the executive leadership team.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position manages all employees of the department and is responsible for the performance management and hiring of the employees within that department.

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., for a total of 40 hours per week. Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
Travel
This position requires moderate travel, between 15-20%. Most travel is outside the local area and overnight. Some of the travel may be international.
Minimum Qualifications:
MBA in Marketing or other related field or equivalent business experience is required
• 7 years of experience in market assessment, market development and Marketing management with responsibility for international markets, preferably in the outdoor apparel industry
• Previous department management experience is required, including the development of long range and annual business plans and budgets, market forecasts and reports, and budget management
• Previous leadership experience is required, as well as excellent conflict resolution and influence skills, superb interpersonal skills and the ability to work successfully with a variety of people
• Excellent analytical and creative problem solving abilities are required
• Highly organized, self-motivated, and energetic individual
• Willing to work long hours and weekends as required
