Job Description
JOB PURPOSE
Directs the overarching Project Management Office strategy necessary to support Mary Kay’s corporate New Product Strategy and Supply Chain Capital investment projects. Oversees the New Product Development (NPD) process and identifies, recommends, and implements industry best practices. Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, implementation, execution, control, and completion of the Mary Kay NPD process that will result in the commercialization of new products consistent with the goals of the global product strategy. Facilitates structured gate level decisions at the various stages of development for all NPD projects with the Product Leadership Team (PLT) and Capital investments with the Capital Gate Committee. Provides direction to global project team leaders regarding the stage-gate readiness assessment. Responsible for maintaining focus and discipline in following the structure and the resulting allocation of limited global resources for product development.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Directs, leads and develops the global NPD process strategy and execution for on-time, on-budget aspects of the portfolio of global sales force products. Responsibilities include immediate and long-term NPD processes and Capital Investment projects. Responsibilities also include managing strategic relationships and communication with domestic and global functional related departments and Regional leadership. This position directs NPD related activities to ensure that new products are delivered to global markets on time and on cost. 30%
2. Drives change management throughout the NPD departments/divisions by identifying best practices and managing ongoing restructuring of internal processes related to new product development. Facilitates change implementation and helps teams navigate through new workflow. Leads the Department Leadership Team (DLT), a collaboration of departmental Manager/Director-level leaders among the cross functional areas, in reviewing/implementing the NPD processes and ensuring adherence to process. Champions the NPD process and challenges assumptions among senior leadership, peers, and project teams to continuously improve the NPD process. Reports on project activities, problems and requirements to senior management as a strategic tool in keeping the team, experts and working groups informed and focused on goals and objectives. Establishes project processes and success criteria as well as identifies/manages project risks and develops contingency plans. Creates and utilizes methodologies and project management tools to track implementation plans, report on activity and communicate to team and external partners. 20%
3. Supervises and mentors direct reports as assigned. Manages staff by providing direction and coaching/mentoring as required. Develops performance evaluations and conducts reviews with employees. Identifies staff development needs and ensures appropriate training and development. High level of collaboration required with New Product Development partners and region/market leaders. 20%
4. Manages and facilitates the gate decision meeting for PLT which consists of the Vice Presidents representing Global Inventory Control, Process Engineering, Brand Development, Research and Development, Chief Scientific Officer, Regional VP’s, and Chief Marketing Officer. Leads discussion and review of each project submitted for gate review by ordering and introducing the projects. Maintains process discipline by staying on process and immediately redirecting discussion if a PLT member attempts to conduct design reviews or solve problems. Documents decisions and decision logic for each project. 20%
5. Collaborates with the PLT to develop an overall context and framework for the ways in which the company should be managing projects, managing/reviewing project portfolio, communicating with various stakeholders and the methods and technologies to be deployed. Collaborates in decision-making about strategic direction of projects. 10%
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Education: Master’s degree
Experience:Minimum of 8 years of product development and/or project management experience, preferably in a cosmetic/beauty/fashion industry environment. PMP Certification desired. 5 years of management experience required in order to select, train, manage and develop the product development staff.
1. Must be an effective relationship builder to establish credibility and form business partnerships with internal partners and effectively lead resources to bring new products to fruition. Must be influential and able to convince new product development partners of the value of Agile and the New Product Development process.
2. Strong communication skills to provide direct and candid input to peers and PLT members with the ability to maintain focus on strategic objectives, key facts, and the agreed upon decision making process. Understands the value of constructive debate and is capable of guiding strategic discussions to actions and decisions.
3. Requires a proven track record of demonstrated strategic leadership and big picture thinking with a proven ability to successfully execute all phases of the product development life cycles: concept, development, product launches. Must have focus, commitment and drive to execute plans.
4. Must be flexible and understand implications of changes to product launches and resources at a strategic level.
5. Must have a strong, assertive personality balanced with a respect for others; must be able to communicate recommendations in a manner that will drive results.
6. Must have demonstrated expertise in a variety of business development concepts, practices and procedures and the ability to plan and accomplish goals. Must be flexible, adaptable and thrive in a dynamic environment.
