General Description
The Director, Strategic Planning & Marketing Intelligence position will lead and support cross-business initiatives, provide strategic advice to senior management, assist in business planning, and manage strategic projects across the Consumer Business Division (CBD). Key activities and responsibilities include:
• Oversee mid-to-long term strategic planning processes for sales and marketing in the US
• Develop strategic communications for internal and external audiences
• Identify and manage strategic initiatives spanning growth, go-to-market, and operational performance enhancement by directly scoping, initiating, planning, leading, and executing strategy projects
• Analyze competitive business performance from a market perspective and develop strategies and tactics to achieve and sustain market leadership
• Scenario Planning
• Provide in-depth strategic insights/foresights and thought leadership on electronics industry, channel, and consumer trends to top management
• Develop business cases and strategic options based on industry insights, internal capabilities, financial models, and ROI analysis to support planning initiatives
• Develop new business models & partnerships that will drive the growth of business in the US
Strategic Analyses:
• Provide Senior Management with timely and insightful analysis on critical competitive threats, movements and strategies with implications and recommended action
• Analyze economy, industry, and channel to determine their potential impact on sales and marketing goals. Generate associated action recommendation.
• Analyze primary and secondary sources to provide clear explanation on competitors’ activities.
• Provide critical analytical support for business decision-making involving cross-departmental and multi-functional areas • Accurate and insightful analysis of various aspects of industry and market that are actionable and used by relevant departments across the division
• Timely delivery of analyses
Strategy Development:
• Mid-to-long term Strategy: Create mid-to-long term (3 - 5 year time horizons) strategies by working with key stakeholders (Sales, Marketing, Demand Generation, etc.) within SEA
• Management Planning: Identify strategy, goals, and objectives for the next year by working with key stakeholders (Sales, Marketing, MARCOM, etc.) within SEA. Supervise Management Planning process, and facilitate key support groups development of their strategies based on MP guidance
• Go-to-Market Strategy: Provide thought leadership on go-to-market strategies for existing and emerging categories, including channel promotion, positioning, etc. Identify new business opportunities and disruptive strategies
• Organizational Strategy: Work with Executive Management and HR in developing human capital strategies to help achieve business objectives
• Business Enhancement: Lead efforts to enhance existing businesses to achieve strategic objectives through operational enhancements
• Business performance - revenue growth / profitability / M/S – of supported divisions
• Extent to which key stakeholders and executive management are able to identify and activate new growth and market activities to supplement existing core categories
Scenario Planning
• Scenario Analysis: Analyze the competitive marketplace to identify market opportunities and risks. Develop contingency plans for possibilities based upon both known and anticipated actions by competitors and the overall market
• Recommendations: Propose workable actions based on comprehensive review of data including sell-in, sell-through, forecast, target sell-through, total demand, etc. for competitors, Samsung, and the industry
• Continuous Improvement: Measure effectiveness of marketing programs for continuous improvement • Insights leading to actionable scenario planning recommendations
• Regular scenario planning meetings
• Fact based, insightful recommendations.
Strategic Initiatives:
• Project Management: Oversee projects of strategic importance. Project can include those involving the use of Samsung staff and/or outside consultants
• Cross-divisional Task Forces: Lead and facilitate cross-divisional task forces on key strategic issues based on senior management request
• Business Case Development: Create business cases, financial analyses, and ROI assessments based on understanding of SEA’s capabilities, financial principles, and strategic insights
• Applies effective project management skills so that key milestones are met on time and at or under budget
• Ability to drive cross-divisional value through facilitated collaboration, strategic initiatives, etc.
Strategic Communications:
• Business Reviews: Lead regular business reviews with key stakeholders to monitor and report on the progress against key goals, objectives, and strategic initiatives
• Meetings/Workshops: Oversee planning for conference, meetings and workshops and ensure successful outcomes and follow-ups on issues of strategic importance
• Presentations: Create (Samsung) and external (customer) communications on issues relating to the state of the business and of strategic importance
• Quality execution of the meetings & workshops that result in measurable and actionable outcome, and complete follow-ups
• Able to assist executive management in relaying critical information in a clear and concise fashion
Necessary Skills / Attributes
Required qualifications:
• BA is required for this position with a graduate level degree (i.e., MA, MBA, etc) preferred
• Demonstrated strategic thinker who can turn strategic objectives into practical action
• Ability to efficiently scope and execute concrete strategic initiatives
• Experience in leading and coordinating multi-functional teams with diverse interests toward shared objectives
• Very strong verbal and written communication skills and facility for establishing relationships cross-functionally and cross-divisionally
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office is required with an emphasis on quantitative analysis (Excel) and the creation of presentations (PowerPoint)
• 14+ years of work experience
• Authorized to work in the U.S
Preferred qualifications:
• Prior consulting experience (internal or external) a strong plus
• Background in corporate strategy, strategic planning, consulting, and/or business development
• Knowledge of one or more consumer goods industries, preferably in consumer electronics, but not required
