POSITION SUMMARY STATEMENT:
The Director, Technical Operations will lead, through management and development of internal and external technical resources to work in cooperation with other groups within World Wide Research, Development, and Scientific Affairs, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Quality Assurance, and Global Sourcing to develop acceptable new and reformulated products, provide the technology transfer support to bring products through the pilot phase and into production, and provide technical support in the form of manufacturing process development, performance improvements and cost improvements, where necessary.This role will be responsible for deliverables leading to on-time product launches and will use established metrics to track key development activities, budgets and resource requirements.
DETAILED RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:
• Direct new and reformulated product development projects received from R&D Formulation
• Lead Technical Operations Center of Excellence at Winston-Salem responsible for pilot trials of global commercial products, product transfers into the facility, and for the design and execution of feasibility and manufacturability trials as needed for new product development, cost savings, and product/process improvement
• Manage and develop a group of process engineers/research scientists. Enhance these internal resources through training & hiring
• Ensure group development, optimization and evaluation activities are consistently in the forefront of industry best practices
• Represent personally, or through delegation, the technical operations position and functional delivery toward the development, scale up and manufacture of new product forms on cross functional teams
• Ensure alignment with global new product development process of Herbalife to facilitate the costing, development and evaluation of pilot batches, in addition to the timely generation and collection of performance and stability data with associated documentation for new and/or improved product launches
• Ensure departmental tasks are completed in a timely fashion and communicated effectively to internal stakeholders
• Support the establishment of research-based relationships with manufacturers and raw ingredient suppliers: solicit and evaluate new raw ingredients, product ideas and new manufacturing technologies.
• Provide technical support to the other elements of the Worldwide Operations group in the area of cost and product performance improvements, as needed
• Manage the department capital, expense and administrative budgets
• Develop and maintain a culture and environment that supports creativity innovation and product quality
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Sets directional activities and objectives for Technical Operations staff in Winston-Salem
• Evaluates direct reports via performance evaluation process
• Develops career path for direct reports, and approves outcomes for other Technical Operations employees in Winston-Salem
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Skills:
• Ability to identify and resolve technical issues and influence appropriate outcomes in a practical manner, using appropriate data gathering and analysis
• Ability to lead a technical team in the execution of technology/product transfer, including completion of experimental and feasibility trials and manufacture of qualification/stability batches
• Ability to organize personal and extended team workloads for effective course setting on key initiatives
• Strong and timely results orientation and collaborative strategy setting with internal and external stakeholders
• Ability to interact effectively at all levels with sensitivity to cultural diversity
• Ability to function as an effective team member
• Ability to adapt as the external environment and organization evolves
• Ability to contribute approaches and solutions to daily operational and long range planning concerns of senior management
• Excellent oral presentation and interpersonal skills
• Demonstrated creativity and innovation, and a successful track record of scale-up process research and customer-centric products
• Ability to provide technical training on basic statistic and process capability analysis
Experience:
• 10+ years’ of experience in product development within nutritional, dietary supplement, medical food or functional food industry
• 5+ years’ experience managing Technical Operations team or 5+ years’ experience in a Technical Operations role
• Demonstrated leadership/management experience
• Comprehensive understanding of practical issues 1-2 major functional areas and applies application of knowledge.
• Networking experience with raw material vendors and/or external research groups
Education:
• BS with a major in Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy, or a scientifically related field or the equivalent in work related experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Documented achievements in the food and/or dietary supplement industry
• Strong awareness of regulatory requirements and QA/QC
• Proven career experience in collateral classes of trade or international business experience
• Track record of other functional responsibilities that demonstrates capacity beyond traditional development function (e.g. flavor, sensory)
• Additional education or experience demonstrating communication and organizational skills
