Job Summary
The Tax Director will lead various strategic tax processes and projects for Harley-Davidson, Inc. and subsidiaries. This position will provide coaching and mentoring to a diverse group of tax employees, help define role expectations and be an integral communication link between tax and the business functions as it relates to tax reporting requirements. This position is responsible for establishing directions, plans, and resource requirements required to ensure compliance with tax filing obligations and improve the tax results while balancing tax department and other stakeholder interests.
Job Responsibilities
• Provide guidance to and collaborate with internal stakeholders including members of the following teams: tax department, finance, treasury, legal, controllers, logistics, sales and operations. Primary external stakeholders include tax advisors and tax auditors.
• Oversee and coordinate various processes and tax team members on projects by providing guidance, direction, and support as needed based on the experience level of the team.
• Establish, monitor, and communicate internal tax policies and procedures to ensure appropriate documentation and internal controls to minimize tax risks and liabilities.
• May provide consulting support related to non-income tax matters including indirect taxes, customs duties and withholding taxes.
Education Specifications
This position requires a Bachelor’s degree; accounting or finance major preferred. A CPA designation is preferred and an advanced degree in Tax or Law is a plus.
Experience Requirements
This role typically requires a minimum of 12 years related experience with at least 5 years of team supervision and management experience. Specific experience should highlight the following:
• Emphasis and focus on planning, developing and documenting process execution and high-level strategies within specific functional areas of expertise.
• Demonstrated proficiency with office productivity tools (i.e., spreadsheets, word processing, presentation, calendaring software), Tax Preparation Software, and Financial systems.
• Experience in supporting ERP development through identification of tax requirements from system blueprinting through development, testing and implementation with focus on efficiency and automation.
• Approves tasks, processes and related deliverables and has responsibility for functional area with key control and SOX signoff authority.
• Read, analyze and interpret tax law, identify issues, make recommendations, develop solutions, create/manage execution plans, signoff authority for medium to high complexity issues and tax filing positions.
• Utilizing foundational tax technical and business operations understanding, serves as key tax resource for business, across tax jurisdictions, tax specialties and Company functions.
• Brings the right stakeholders together to achieve the best answer for the company; rather than the best answer for self or function.
• Solves unique problems with broad impact on the business, requires conceptual and innovative thinking to develop alternatives and recommendations. Proactively identifies and solves more complex problems.
• Communicates complex ideas, anticipates potential objections and persuades others, often at senior levels. Negotiates with Senior Management and tax authorities to achieve favorable corporate results.
• Participates on highly visible, multi-disciplinary project teams or initiatives, provides thought leadership.
