Company website is looking to grow its dynamic team of web journalists. We’re looking for an experienced writer who has a passion for digital journalism and who thrives in a live, breaking news environment. This new team member will have several years of experience writing the news, preferably for a reputable news organization, and will have a strong understanding of the demands of breaking news. Writing quickly and correctly is essential to the job as is a strong sense of news judgement.
A keen interest and proven experience in digital storytelling and social media awareness is also a must. A life in news demands some flexibility with scheduling.
Early mornings, and late-night shifts are typical. This position may require weekend work. Some of the responsibilities our new team member will have include:
• Gathering elements from our live broadcast to help develop news stories for Company website
• This will include writing, capturing and editing video, and using images that come into the newsroom.
• Making calls, interviewing people and writing news stories for Company website
• Monitoring the newswire
• Monitoring and updating CP24’s social media network
• Staying on top of digital storytelling trends.
• Producing original content, story features, exclusive video, photo galleries, blogs etc.
• Communicating and sharing information with the rest of the newsroom
Qualifications:
• Minimum 2 years experience writing news, preferably for online or newspaper.
• A degree/diploma in journalism is strongly suggested
• A highly developed editorial sense -- Must have strong news and editorial judgment, strong copy editing skills, clear and concise writing ability, have an excellent command of the English language, and an ability to write accurate and engaging headlines.
• Must be familiar with Canadian Press Style Guide and Canadian libel law
• Capable of turning complex issues into clear, concise copy under tremendous deadline pressures
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with a great respect for team work.
• Able to handle a constant stream of internal and external communications
• Knowledge of iNews, Photoshop and Polopoly would be an asset.
• Experience in dealing with breaking news coverage
Bilingualism is an asset (English and French)
