In the Senior Business Developer role on Alexa’s Startup and Venture Capital BD team, you will be working with top-tier venture capital firms and startups to inspire investment in voice and to facilitate voice innovation. This work directly impacts creation of unique experiences to delight customers using Alexa technology on Company and third party devices. You will impact Alexa users across the world.
You will build on Alexa’s existing momentum within start-up ecosystems to help define, shape, and deliver on Alexa’s positioning within the venture community. Initially the focus will be on developing and managing relationships with the venture investment community and their investment portfolios, and building mindshare for Alexa at the senior-most layers in both types of organizations. You will be the “face of Company” with the most prominent venture capital firms and startup founders in the world, driving discussions with investors, portfolio managers, and startup founders. You will build and execute strategies that position Alexa as a must-have for companies in their portfolios. You will become an Alexa subject matter expert in the pursuit of the needs of the venture community and their portfolios. You will work closely with diverse cross-functional teams (business development, solution architecture, evangelism, marketing, PR and the Alexa Fund) to inform the design and delivery of programming that supports the needs of start-up ecosystems with the goal of building new businesses and customer experiences around voice technology. Your role will require working with the highest levels of the Devices and Alexa organizations, demanding strong presence, leadership and influencing skills.
In this role, you will shape programs to make the right voice insights and services available to your external customers while offering perspectives on investment trends and opportunities to your internal customers. You will think strategically about business, product, and technical challenges and map the intersection of startup and investor needs to Company priorities and capabilities. In creating programs and processes, you will plan for scalability internationally.
The right candidate will have a successful track record interacting at the highest levels of startup and venture communities and demonstrated experience in developing go-to-market strategies. This person will have a deep understanding of the venture capital and startup communities, a proven track record of leading and driving multiple complex programs to meet business objectives, a customer-obsessed and collaborative approach, strong data and metrics bias, and a passion for helping developers and startups innovate and create new and exciting experiences. They will have experience and knowledge of product development, infrastructure, and operational processes used by developers. They will be able to speak credibly to the senior most venture capital investors with as much ease as they dive deep into technical discussions with startup leaders.
Role & Responsibilities
Develop and manage relationships with the most influential venture capital investors, accelerators, incubators, and other influencers within the startup ecosystem to establish mindshare of Alexa as a must-have feature for portfolio companies and voice technology as a must have investment
Conduct roadshows, briefings and other customer-focused education events that promote Alexa thought leadership both 1:1 and in public industry events
Establish technical credibility and drive discussions with the senior-most influencers at the relevant organizations
Create an ‘index’ of highest potential startups that stand to create differentiating Alexa experiences. Develop and manage relationships with these and other startup founders domestically and internationally
Define services startups require to bring differentiating Alexa experiences and enhance their products/services via voice. Work with cross-functional teams to design, pilot and scale Alexa--focused programs (technology access, SA support, marketing, etc…). Facilitate startup access to those services (e.g., SA, VUI designers)
Collaborate with marketing, PR and evangelism teams to create a playbook that demonstrates the business opportunity for the venture and founder community to embrace Alexa
Discover, capture and report learnings from the field about customer challenges and opportunities as they relate to the Alexa platform. Develop domain-level venture and startup trends report to share with Amazonian leaders as you aim to influence Alexa’s roadmaps, and create a pipeline of external partners that could strengthen Alexa’s services
Advocate internally for product features and functionality to scale and create unique Alexa experiences for end users
Prepare and conduct business reviews to the Alexa senior management team regarding progress and metrics that demonstrate the winning of mindshare within the venture community and the adoption by their portfolio companies of the Alexa service
Recruit and train new members of the Startup and Venture Capital BD Practice
Deliver persuasive, passionate, high impact, high quality presentations to senior decision makers
The right person will be highly technical and analytical, and will be capable of understanding the complexities of software, app, and voice development processes across multiple platforms
5-7 years of relevant work experience in solutions development, product management, product marketing, business development
5+ years of experience working with venture capital investors or early stage companies, or building and selling solutions to firms in this space
A passion for developers and startups! Great understanding of how the venture capital industry operates and the unique characteristics and culture of startups
Passion for Alexa and cloud technologies – deep understanding of voice development and cloud platforms, and their relevance to early stage companies
Technical knowledge of voice applications, platforms, and data ecosystem, with ability to go deep on technical aspects to understand current and future customer needs and present Alexa technical benefits
Experience developing, implementing, and managing cross-functional industry solutions (e.g., via product, go to market or sales motions)
Excellent business and financial acumen and negotiations skills
Operational excellence mindset, data driven problem-solving and ability to simplify complexity all applied in delivering scalable tactical plans
Proven track record of taking ownership and driving results. Ability to effectively lead and work with a variety of organizations, management levels, cultures, and personalities. Demonstrated effectiveness working across multiple business units to achieve results. Ability to internalize goals and work independently to create appropriate action plans for those goals
Exceptional interpersonal and communication (both written and verbal) skills. Experience communicating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders across multiple teams
Relevant technical knowledge and ability to go deep enough on relevant technologies key to the industry
MBA is desired along with technical background in Computer Science, Engineering, Math; working knowledge of software development practices and data center / infrastructure / networking technologies highly desired
Proven ability to hire and develop the best employees. Comfort working with a broad range of technology tools including SharePoint, Excel, Access, Word, and Company website
