Sustainability Manager- Smartwool
Location: Denver, CO
The Smartwool Manager of Sustainability leads Smartwool’s sustainability strategy, initiatives, tactics and overall company culture around environmental, human and animal sustainability. The person works closely with Smartwool’s parent company, VF, to align with corporate goals and leads the internal Smartwool Sustainability Council. Key partners include: Vendors, Sourcing, Distribution, Manufacturers, Procurement, VF Sustainability, Product Development, Sales and Marketing, Business Development
Lead and evolve the Smartwool Sustainability Strategic Roadmap. This includes constant assessment of strategies against VF and Smartwool goals and values, as well as leading, managing and sitting on sustainability projects within the organization. Manage strategic goal project leads’ accountability, budget, timeline and perform monthly report on roadmap.
Drive innovative solutions to decrease greenhouse gas emissions throughout Smartwool supply chain and position Smartwool to be leader in sustainability.
Develop policies, programs, systems and metrics to ensure objectives are achieved and Smartwool and VF sustainability goals met.
Support supply chain in transition to natural performance materials.
Lead the organization in implementing and adhering to ZQ and RWS, the Responsible Wool Standard, ensuring that sheep are treated with respect based on their Five Freedoms and best practices in the management and protection of their land.
Partner with leaders in each tier of Smartwool’s supply chain to understand the company’s goals and make sustainability and responsibility part of the fabric of what we do and how we make decisions.
Support building the strategy and execution of the supply chain circular economy, warranty and return materials, and environmental programs.
Engage with sourcing (procurement), legal, business units, and other cross-functional teams to align program objectives and manage key metrics
Lead data collection for Smartwool transparency report.
Contribute to internal and external reporting and communications. Make sustainability presentations to the company and be the external ‘voice of sustainability’, while working with internal PR and Communications team.
Manage certifications tracking and supply chain audits and traceability.
Work with VF sustainability team to create engagement strategies to leverage relationships, meet business needs, and build transparency.
Create plans and programs to educate employees on sustainability strategic goals and motivate their engagement with and through participation.
Assist in environmental reporting requests.
Lead Smartwool Sustainability Council to drive internal sustainability initiatives.
Participate in VF sustainability group and OIA Sustainability Working Group.
Develop and maintain digital resources for Smartwool employees on sustainability & wellbeing.
Lead Smartwool’s passion and value of sustainability by infusing a sustainability mindset more deeply into the company culture, ensuring staff goals reflect sustainability efforts.
(Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
Bachelor of Fine Arts – Graphic Design preferred
3+ years of business experience
Breadth of design experience including brand, print, retail, web, social media and advertising
Strong background in packaging, print production and page layout
Strong organization skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects and tasks
Ability to provide rationale for executed work as defined by Creative Brief
Strong knowledge of Mac computer design systems, including Adobe Suite and Microsoft Office
Ability to design within a project’s budget parameters
Ability to prioritize work based on deadlines and efficiencies
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
SKILLS FOR SUCCESS:
Knowledge of industry reporting standards related to sustainability, as well as industry trends in Science-Based Targets, SDGs and RWS.
Experience with GHG inventory and/or carbon accounting.
Keen attention to detail and accuracy is necessary in order to analyze emissions and carbon reporting, internal marketing campaigns and communications.
Organized, responsive, and able to gain support and consensus with multiple stakeholders.
Strong project management experience, including the ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously
Strong written and oral communication, organizational and time management skills; excellent presentation skills.
Proven interpersonal skills and ability to work in a diverse team environment with various personality types to get the work done; ability to relate well and show respect and consideration for others.

Travel estimated at one 3-7 day trip per month, depending on location. International travel included.
