Job Description –
Research Technical Strategist, Meltspinning
Provide technical leadership, expertise, and strategic vision for our core materials technology platform (meltspinning) in order to create competitively advantaged products that drive long-term market leadership across our Personal Care and KCP brands. This position will interface with colleagues across GNW as well as global partners in Company, KCI, KCP, CR&E and external partners in academia, government, industry, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in support of realizing critical enterprise objectives.
Technology Strategy Development / Execution
Develop and execute overall technology strategy for the core materials technology platform, working in partnership with GNW leadership and BU stakeholders to ensure strategy is endorsed and properly resourced for success. Strategy development principles:
Should cover a 10 year time horizon and take into account changing market dynamics, including competitive landscape, so as to position our BU’s for long-term market leadership.
Should address high priority/high opportunity business needs across sectors and contain customer facing language that ensures relevance to our business partners.
Should give visibility to capital investments required to deliver on plan.
Should include IP landscape that highlights the areas we want to own and includes proposal on how to achieve desired protection in those areas.
Should be aspirational and thought provoking, but have a realistic path to realization of critical objectives.
Develop RACI for core materials technology platform:
Establish approval process for new Front End Innovation (FEI) projects that ensures we’re properly prioritizing and working on things that support our long-term strategy while still encouraging blue-sky thinking.
Culture of Innovation
Model One-Company behaviors, act in a way consistent with creating a culture of innovation, and serve as the technical/material scout for our core materials technology platform, ensuring we have strong industry presence and the ability to influence future technology landscape:
Be a thought leader on how to drive a culture of innovation within GNW, sharing ideas with GNW leadership and implementing those with highest impact potential.
Operate with a future market orientation, proactively seeking out information that has the potential to change our business environment, making it visible to GNW leadership, and developing recommendations on how we should respond within the context of our core technologies.
Build relationships with organizations/vendors in the core material space and bring relevant insights/opportunities to the business for evaluation.
Leverage open innovation / university programs where relevant to deliver critical enterprise objectives related to core materials.
Utilize industry connections to identify PR opportunities that allow us to build the GNW brand externally, thereby creating a halo effect internally.
Create appropriate forums to enable cross-pollination of ideas across sectors, functions and geographies and be a role model for use of IMF / R&E University.
Build GNW leadership awareness and buy-in of current and aspirational state relative to core materials technology development.
Serve as a conduit to the business units (Personal Care, KCP, Global/Regional R&E), ensuring they are aligned to our core materials technology strategy and aware of progress on critical long-term (3 years+) initiatives.
Strengthen the GNW brand within the business units by modeling a positive mindset, proactively responding to constructive feedback and bringing new ideas that generate excitement and reinforce the value GNW brings to the organization.
In collaboration with GNW R&E Technical Director, establish bi-annual connection point with Chief Scientist in order to understand how GNW initiatives support organization’s goals, highlighting any gaps that need to be addressed by the broader GNW technical community and securing funding from our corporate office where appropriate.
Building GNW Talent Pipeline
Provide mentorship within the technical community, proactively identifying at least one member of the TLP to formally mentor.
Provide project consultation as needed to build talent of more junior scientists and ensure we deliver against OGSiM metrics.
Partner with GNW (Product Supply, Capital Engineering, Strategy) and business units to ensure the GNW global asset base for core materials delivers sustainable competitive advantage in-line with our technology strategy.
Work in concert with GPO to vet out technical and innovation capabilities of strategic suppliers.
Candidates should have extensive scientific/engineering experiences and notable accomplishments across technologies important to GNW with the ability to help set strategic direction for the department as well as create and drive major, complex science and technology initiatives. The successful candidate will be an accomplished leader with the ability to work at the front end of science and technology development, but just as importantly will have a demonstrated ability to drive and implement technical projects towards commercial realization through strong collaborative interaction with diverse business functions.
A strong track record in creating technology programs while working with external technology partners is crucial including universities, suppliers, government laboratories, and industry consortiums. Mentoring and coaching junior scientists and influencing management are also key skills for this R&E Technical Strategist role. Candidate needs to be a “leader of leaders” with the ability to provide project work direction to senior technical employees.
An advanced degree in a major scientific or engineering discipline from an accredited college or university is preferred.
Broad and deep knowledge of nonwoven technologies and minimum of 15 years of experience in application of nonwoven materials, processes, raw materials and BU product applications particularly in the meltspinning area.
Knowledge of BU converting processes and practices
A demonstrated ability to identify and solve complex problems which require significant personal technical expertise, team leadership, collaboration with other scientific disciplines and BU’s, as well as identification and management of external partnerships.
A demonstrated ability to collaborate and influence in a global setting across multiple technical groups and BU functions such as R&E, Marketing, Product Supply and Procurement.
Strong ability to function as a mentor for junior scientists, acting as a role model in the application of the scientific method to solve problems of importance for Company.
An extensive demonstrated track record of documenting results in internal publications, using external publications to achieve business objectives, and protecting inventions through patent filings and other forms of intellectual asset management.
Demonstrated continuous personal improvement in scientific and leadership skills through attending classes, conferences, industry consortiums, university forums, and other forms of scientific growth.
