The Western Tidewater Health District is currently seeking a Registered Nurse to join our dedicated team of Public Health Nursing Professionals to provide quality nursing care to our patients in clinics, homes, schools and other areas of the community. This Public Health Nurse will be responsible for the Immunization Administration Program (IAP) for the entire health district. This nurse must remain abreast of the Immunization recommendations and protocols. This Public Health Nurse will assist the nursing staff with CoCasa and VFC audits and will educate staff on immunization updates. The Public Health Nurse will be responsible for employee health for all full-time and wage employees throughout the district, working with the health director to ensure that all employees are evaluated on hire and receive all needed immunizations and training for occupational health. The selected incumbent will be cross-trained to support our other nursing programs as well. In addition, this Public Health Nurse will participate in emergency preparedness, field operations, and epidemiology investigations as they relate to communicable disease, and population health education.
This Public Health Nurse will primarily work out of our Suffolk Health Clinic (135 Hall Avenue, Suffolk, Virginia). However, work will also be performed at other district clinic offices (Courtland, Franklin and Smithfield) as well as other locations in the community as needed. Mileage reimbursement is available for any work-related travel. Typical work hours are Monday-Friday 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.

At a minimum, this position requires:
•A current RN license for Virginia
•Must have working knowledge of adult and/or childhood immunization administration
•Knowledge of the principles and practices of public health or public health nursing, including the social and economic conditions associated with it.
•Experience performing standard nursing procedures including venipuncture, and patient and family assessments in a medical/clinical setting
•Strong interviewing and communication skills.
•Ability to exercise sound judgment, analyze and problem solve, organize work and establish priorities.
•Proficient with computers and MS Office programs.
•A current CPR certification and a valid driver’s license must be acquired prior to employment.
Preferred qualifications include:
•Experience with public health nursing
Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a state and federal criminal history background check and the Department of Social Service’s Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check, and E-Verify. This position is required to maintain a valid driver’s license and adhere to VDH’s driver safety policy.
