Are you super organized, a great communicator and obsessed with understanding complicated matrixed relationships? Do you think the intersection between the newsroom and product is the next chapter in our digital evolution? DT is seeking a project manager with editorial and product experience to help us see into product roadmaps, build relationships with other project managers and surface milestones in project and tool development.
Today there are more teams making new tools, testing new functionality, creating new packaging and identifying new forms of journalism in the Times newsroom. DT is increasingly seeing a need for more consideration and planning for what we’re scaling to the newsroom. The project manager role will help us get in front of competing priorities and scaling bottlenecks, and have visibility into where product and the newsroom are working closest.
This person will work with senior DT leadership to create and keep updated a combined roadmap for work that impacts the newsroom at scale. They will be a key player in surfacing tools, functionality, features and projects that will reach the newsroom at scale. The project manager will help track project development, how we’re giving feedback, and embeds with newsroom and product teams.
DT is a team of journalists and support specialists dedicated to the Times digital transformation. We shape and inform the tools, formats and features used to make Times journalism, develop expertise to help others learn editorial and workflow best practices, and support journalists 24/7/365 with any questions or problems that arise (#newsroom-help).
This role will be responsible for:
Organizing and updating DT’s product roadmap for newsroom scaling
Meeting with project managers in Engagement teams update a centralized roadmap
Gathering feedback about scaled or scalable products and features from direct interactions with users, Slack channels and training sessions, and organizing on a centralized to surface to product managers for follow-up or escalation to the Masthead via DT leadership.
Organizing and ranking reporter, editor and desk head feedback on scaled or scalable tools and features throughout their development for follow-up or escalation to the Masthead via DT leadership. Create separate lists/tags for: Bugs, feature requests, questions/comments, workflow and other relevant categories.
Creating and maintain a streamlined centralized document or Airtable for with status of each product and key dates for DT visibility and prioritization, and DT feedback
Tracking DT embeds, feedback and newsroom vetting
Drafting and writing communications for broader newsroom distribution or desk-wide notes around updates of scaled or scalable product, in coordination with product and project managers.
Set up recurring meetings with desks to proactively address product questions and concerns and to offer status on outstanding issues. This should happen ahead of, during and after scaling rollout projects.
We’re looking for someone who has the following:
At least three to five years of experience as organizing and keeping track of projects with many stakeholders, could be formal project management experience or a newsroom editor equivalent
Experience working in newsrooms or in tech products that power journalism
Adept at digital project management tools
A passion for learning new tools and journalism forms
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
A collaborative attitude and the desire to work in a team toward common goals
An eagerness to work on a team that values trust, transparency, collaboration and empathy as key workplace principles
