The Production Supervisor for Speed Reducer Machining is responsible for leadership of ~30 hourly employees over 3 shifts. While a machining background is desirable, candidates who are experienced and effective business leaders with a passion for continuous improvement are most preferable.
The Supervisor is tasked with the objective of achieving department goals and production schedules that ensure a quality product and on-time delivery with maximum customer satisfaction in a safe work environment. The position is “hands on” in a fast-paced, physically demanding machining environment and requires a supervisor who is willing and able to work alongside the employees on a daily basis.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Execute supervisory responsibilities to include, but not limited to: planning, assigning, and directing work; administering and complying with Company policies and procedures; managing attendance and approving Kronos records in a timely manner for processing payroll; interviewing, onboarding, and training employees; managing performance, writing and conducting appraisals, and administering corrective action; and proactively responding to employee grievances to ensure high morale and maximum employee satisfaction.
Facilitate, promote, and implement lean manufacturing initiatives that drive continuous improvements in safety, quality, delivery, and cost in the Machining department, following the Altra Business System (ABS) tools and methods. Lead and/or participate in Kaizen events and GEMBA (“go and see” walks. Assist Value Stream Manager with executing strategic deployment of ABS objectives.
Serve as an active member of the Safety Committee by participating in monthly safety meetings, safety/5S audits, and reenactments. Ensure a safe working environment by enforcing compliance with the plant’s Safety Policy and state and federal OSHA regulations.
Evaluate production and quality problems, provide guidance and assistance with resolving issues, and facilitate actions to implement corrective actions, including technical support and instruction for new manufacturing procedures. Continuously seek out and recommend measures to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and improve quality. Coordinate and administer Quality Incident Investigations in order to problem solve costly incidents.
Analyze and plan workforce utilization, workflow, and design of equipment layout and workspace for maximum efficiency.
Fulfill administrative and human resources responsibilities as required by the role to include, but not limited to, developing and writing work instructions and job breakdowns, completing production reports and problem-solving / corrective action documents, and maintaining training/skills matrices.

Strong mechanical aptitude and a demonstrated understanding of common manufacturing and machining processes, equipment or machinery.
Demonstrated proficiency with reading and understanding blueprints, technical drawings, schematics.
Strong analytical ability to recognize need for modification of procedures or processes, identify root cause, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions where limited standardization or information exists.
Results-oriented with a demonstrated ability to be self-directed and self-motivated, effectively manage time and multiple priorities, and meet deliverables in a timely manner. .
Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively deliver and transfer knowledge of technical concepts and respond to questions.
Willingness to be flexible and adapt to changes in internal processes, delays or unexpected events in order to meet daily customer demand and on time delivery requirements, including performing any task required to meet department objectives.
Intermediate to advanced level proficiency with MS Office software applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
Willingness and ability to work extended hours, including weekends as required in order to support manufacturing needs.
Willing and able to occasionally travel domestically to other Altra sites, vendor and/or customer visits, training events, trade shows, etc.
Education and Experience Requirements
High School degree is required (Associate or higher level degree is strongly desired) along with 2 or more years of progressive work experience in a manufacturing production environment, preferably in mechanical products (metal cutting industry and assembly).
A solid background in machining techniques and prior supervisory experience of hourly production employees is strongly desired.
Progressive work experience in a demanding production/machining environment preferably in mechanical products (metal cutting industry and assembly) in the manufacturing industry
Proven success in implementing process or product improvements is required.
Physical Demand and Work Environment:
Majority of time is spent in a manufacturing production environment with some (but not all) climate-controlled areas. Personal protective safety equipment must be worn, and proper safety precautions must be observed. Potential exposure may include, but is not limited to: solvents, dusts, lead, fiberglass, noise, heat, cold.
Potential physical demands include, but are not limited to: frequent walking and standing, occasional twisting, stooping, carrying, handling, pushing, and pulling; climbing, kneeling and lifting up to 50 lbs. Potential sensory demands include but are not limited to: hearing and seeing.
