Packaging Developer, Design for Value

We are looking for a Packaging Developer, Design for Value to provide engineering technical support for regional value optimization. This position will be based in the Morris Plains, New Jersey and will require national and international travel. Position will report to Senior Manager, Packaging Design for Value, Design for Value
Working within the R&D Packaging team, the Packaging Developer, Design for Value will closely co-ordinate with Marketing, Initiative Management, Procurement, Production, Research & Development and Technical Product Services team to design and deliver cost savings initiatives on time, within cost targets, and of the quality our customers expect.
Development of primary, secondary and tertiary packaging solutions as needed.
Assist to identify issues internally and externally affecting Company’s gross margin, Service, Quality, Cost and Cash using appropriate tools to achieve sustainable solutions (Lean tools, DMS, SPC, etc).
Assist with the Innovation, Conception, Evaluation, and Execution phases to design and execute packages that will meet Company’s required criteria in terms of Quality, Cost, Timing, Functionality, Manufacturability, Aesthetics, Safety, Innovation, Recyclability, and Sustainability.
Assist with research and present innovations with cost potential to the Marketing teams during the Pre-Conception phase.
Attend Briefing/Kickoff meetings with the Marketing teams during the Conception phase for Cost Savings initiatives.
Work to align success criteria with the R&D and Production teams to support handover to Supply Chain Packaging teams.
Track the Development milestones against CPS’s surrounding the packaging components and communicating dates/updates to the MVA, GPPT, WWP, Quality, and Planning teams.
Collecting Conception Costs based on cost saving ideation sessions and design briefs
Researching, Updating, and Creating Bill of Materials (BOM’s); Researching, Updating, and Creating Packaging Component and Filling/Assembly Specifications.
Design, coordinate, and perform packaging componentry and filled units testing as part of technical validation for new initiatives and cost improvement projects ensuring proper quality, cost, and time.
Support production line trials and commissioning for packaging validation and production startups.
Construction and writing of component and finished good specifications to deliver the required consumer expectations for all packaging materials (functional, sensorial, performance) and without impacting Service, Quality, Cost and Cash.
Reviewing/Approving Artwork files within Company, sharing the final files with the Supplier, and ensuring the final files for production are saved within the Company systems.
Attend 1st Productions when possible to ensure components and finished goods are of the correct quality expectations. Approve Standards for the Componentry and Finished Goods.
Own projects to standardize and simplify regional / global packaging menu (non-consumer and consumer noticeable).
Contribute to FMEA and learning plan activities led by R&D Packaging team.
Strong technical expertise, preferably with Packaging degree, with experience in R&D or Supply Chain, with a proven track record of delivering projects with excellence
1+ years of technical experience in cosmetics/pharmaceutical/personal care consumer packaged goods industry with an emphasis on Development and Engineering of primary and secondary packaging (cosmetics, toiletries and fragrance preferred)
Knowledge of cosmetics packaging materials and manufacturing to include (extrusion and injection) blow molding, injection molding, metal pressing and print technologies
Expertise evaluating technical drawings for accuracy, design intent and fit for use.
Must be able to demonstrate competency in handling the interpretations of blueprints and understand the dimensional tolerances to stack-up various component types
Very strong interpersonal communication and presentation skills for verbal and written communication of ideas, technical rationales, risks, issues and recommendations.
Experienced in the New Product Development process to include systems, financial and procurement drivers and project management.
Strong project management skills to include initiating change, time management, co-ordination and communication.
Expertise working with manufacturing plant and qualifying packaging on new production lines.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to identify smart solutions with the right level of pragmatism. Attention to details that matter in Beauty.
Demonstrated ability to operate independently in global diverse teams and environments.
Passion for solving problems using creativity and analytical skills. Experience in identifying technical solutions and their implementation is a plus. Affinity to develop beauty design solutions working with industrial designers / design agencies.
Excellent collaborative skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously. Entrepreneurial, agile and hands-on spirit. Focused and disciplined. High sense of accountability and ownership. Able to handle multiple priorities simultaneously. Open to change in a dynamic growing environment.
Knowledge of DOT Hazmat packaging requirements for flammable/hazardous personal care products.
Microsoft office (Excel, Word, etc.), SOLIDWORKS, CAPE, Knowledge of SAP or similar ERP system along with Packaging Component Specification systems is preferred.
Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
Ability to occasionally travel to assigned regions - domestic and internationally. This will require frequent sitting for an extended period of time.
Ability to routinely follow policies and procedure related to company practices and safety procedures.
Ability to operate various office equipment and/or machinery.

Ability to perform assigned work hours and work periodic overtime in order to meet the job responsibilities of the role.
Individual will be exposed to working in or around a lab environment with various equipment, machinery and chemicals. Safety precautions must be adhered to and followed at all times.
