The Company seeks an aggressive reporter for a 10-week temporary position beginning Feb. 27 at its statehouse office in Tallahassee, Florida. This reporter will be part of a team covering politics and government in the capital for state, national and international audiences. We are seeking a journalist who excels at investigative and accountability coverage, has a track record of aggressive and successful source-building, is adept at producing enterprise off the news, and can set the agenda by working sources and breaking news before other outlets. This person will help cover both the state House and Senate and could also be assigned to non-government stories, if needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates should have at least three years of experience, demonstrate the ability to approach the assignment as a beat and show a track record of source development that will enable the AP to compete aggressively. In addition to crisp and insightful news coverage on deadline, the successful candidate must generate outstanding and fresh enterprise.
The ideal candidate will have knowledge of state government, experience covering legislative sessions and the ability to explain how state government action affects people. The successful candidate also will show prowess in general assignment reporting and demonstrate strong news judgment and editing skills.
The reporter must write accurately and quickly on deadline and in breaking news situations. He/she will have strong interpersonal, organizational and planning skills, including the ability to successfully juggle multiple priorities. The ideal candidate must be a self-starter, possess a high degree of self-motivation and the ability to communicate well with all levels of staff and management. The candidate must be able to work all shifts, including weekends. Fluency in Spanish or another foreign language is a plus.
