WA Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab (WADDL)
Summary of Duties
Under general supervision, the Microbiologist 1 performs basic, standardized laboratory procedures. This position assists the faculty member(s) and manager in charge of the Molecular Diagnostics section and the One Health Diagnostics section of WADDL. The incumbent assists in the daily functioning of the laboratory; including, but not limited to, ensuring that all laboratory test requests are attended to promptly, conducting molecular diagnostics tests, aiding in formulating and applying the Quality Assurance Program and ensuring adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), as required, and participating in research, development and discovery efforts. The majority of testing will be SARS-CoV-2 real time PCR. Eligibility and understanding of BSL-2 & 3 laboratory safety guidelines and work environment is required.

A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, microbiology, biochemistry, zoology, or a related science; OR equivalent education/experience.
1. Physical eligibility required for working in a BSL-2 & 3 environment. See the following link for more information.
2. Must be able to and willing to work overtime and possibly travel to perform field work in the event of a disease outbreak.
3. The successful applicant will also be required to sign a confidentiality statement to protect the privacy of laboratory test results to the extent allowed by law.
4. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
1. Experience in diagnostic microbiology
2. Demonstrated skills and knowledge in:
a. isolation of DNA and/or RNA from tissue and body fluids/samples
b. use of PCR in identification of microbial agents.
3. Experience working with zoonotic agents in appropriate biosafety levels. Knowledge of infectious diseases.
4. Experience with and ability to enter names and number sequences accurately into a medical computer database.
5. Excellent interpersonal skills.
6. Excellent oral and written communications skills.
