Job Description
What You’ll Get to Do:
Work with a dynamic team of ship Marine, Mechanical, Electrical and Structural Engineers, and Naval Architects in our Washington, DC office. Provide technical support on various engineering projects alone and as part of an engineering team primarily in support of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and the Military Sealift Command (MSC). Provide engineering services support to including electrical design, electrical power load analyses, panel sizing, cable sizing, voltage drop calculations, electrical circuit drawings, and work item development, selected record drawing (SRD) updates, cost estimates, specification writing, ship checks and other technical work document preparation in accordance with drawing standards and good marine design practice.
More About the Role:
- Assist in engineering, design, and installation of electrical power systems
- Electrical feasibility and selection for design in electrical systems with generators, motors, variable frequency drives, transformers, Uninterruptable Power Systems (UPS), control panels, HVAC controls, cables, timers, circuit breakers, power panels, batteries, relays, etc…
- Work with power factors, power factor correction (leading and lagging)
- Determine root cause failures and correct them
- Ship Check military and commercial electrical wiring, repair, and maintenance as well as electromechanical-system troubleshooting
- Read/redline schematics and work plans
- Provide regulatory interpretations that translate into technical requirements which can be understood by contractors and field personnel
- Write customer system specific installation and operator maintenance manuals which include detailed drawings, test plans and procedures
- Coordinate the procurement of electrical components from commercial and DOD vendors to meet requirements
- Collaborate with other engineering staff and generate electrical drawings.
- Review/Research ABS SVR/MVR/NVR, IEEE45/IEC Regulatory Rules and Commercial Regulations
- Entry level experience using SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Visio, and other CAD software
- Entry level experience using SKM Power Tools
- Capable of learning drafting/drawing standards (ANSI, DOD, MIL)
- Interpersonal skills required to work with others and communicate effectively
- Exceptional attention to detail
- Ability to work under pressure for quick-reaction projects
- Self-starter, hard worker, multi-tasking
You’ll Bring These Qualifications:
- 1-4 years’ experience with a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and/or marine engineering or related field; US Navy training with an Associate’s degree will be accepted
Minimum Qualifications:
- BSEE, BSE, BE, BSEET, ASEET, or equivalent education and experience
- Ability to write clear reports and specifications in English
- Ability to interface with team members, technical leads and Project Managers
- Ability to work alone on individual projects with minimal supervision and collaborate with multidisciplinary team members
- Ability to write white and point papers with minimal oversight.
- Proficient with MS Excel for calculations, Word, and PowerPoint
- Good verbal (English) communication skills
- Willingness to travel ≤10% of the time
- Perform work onboard a ship, which can involve climbing steep stairways, vertical ladders and working an extended workday
- Must be a US Citizen
These Qualifications Would be Nice to Have:
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification desirable
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, NAVISWORKS and SKM Power Tools
- Ability to create One Line Diagrams, EPLAs and Generator sizing with minimal supervision
- Ability to create Fault Current Analyses and Short Circuit Analyses
- Experience with US Navy and/or US commercial ship design standards ABS SVR/MVR/NVR, and IEEE45/IEC
- Experience designing low power embedded systems
- Familiar with Machinery Control Systems and PLC/HMI/Automation/Controls
- Shipboard and/or shipyard experience
- Other Professional Qualifications/Degrees
