In 2018 and 2019 the consumer team has worked on a range of financial health and labor market topics, including out of pocket healthcare spending, the Online Platform Economy, the household financial impacts of hurricanes, the consumer response to tax refunds and payments, student loan payments, income volatility, and racial gaps in financial outcomes.
The Company Chase Institute seeks a Research Associate in its Washington, D.C. office who will bring the best of quantitative social sciences to conduct and manage research on consumer finance topics using propriety big data within Company Chase. This individual will have experience in translating economic research into implications for policy makers and other decision makers as well as project management and computer programming.
Translate economic research into implications for policy makers and other decision makers.
Conduct original data analysis using anonymized records of consumer banking transactions from all across Company Chase & Co.
Draft and edit research, papers, slide decks, and blog posts for internal and external audiences.
Work alongside other analysts, Research Directors, PhD fellows, academic advisors, and internal thought-leaders to create cutting-edge analyses, using Institute data alone or in combination with existing publicly-available data that add to both the public and academic discourse.
Scope project timelines and manage the work of others with holistic approach (providing regular feedback)
Present research at round tables, conferences, and executive level meetings.
Identify promising potential topics for the Institute’s research agenda.
Assist with coordinating the work of outside academics and policy analysts.
Contribute to efforts to strengthen the Institute as an organization, including developing and refining protocols, establishing strategic partnerships, and building the team.
Master’s degree preferred; Bachelor’s degree required in statistics, economics, public policy, data science, or other related fields.
Ability to translate economic research into implications for policy makers and other decision makers.
Knowledge of household finance topics and policy debates.
Project Management and Team Leadership
2 + years of project management experience
Strong sense of intellectual curiosity and a desire to learn new techniques, approaches, and tools;
Strong writing and oral communication skills;
Ability to work in a high-performance professional environment, with quick turn-around and changing priorities;
Comfort with uncertainty and an entrepreneurial working context; flexibility to take on new roles and responsibilities as this initiative evolves;
Creativity, strict observance of compliance and data privacy controls, and a commitment to intellectual rigor;
Ability to absorb and synthesize large amounts of information and data quickly;
Capacity to be a team-player and be able to work in small, collaborative environment;
Research and Data Analysis
Strong programming experience; preferred languages include (SQL, R, Python, Scala);
Experience with big data computing on a Hadoop platform (e.g. Spark, Hive) and working with technical collaboration tools (git, Jira) are a plus;
Experience working with data sets too large to be reviewed one record at a time or edited by hand (e.g. greater than 100,000 observations); experience with machine learning methods a plus.
Prior experience working with financial services or other administrative data sets is a plus.
