Under administrative direction, is responsible for managing bureau operations within the Division of Fire; performs related duties as required.
Examples of Work

Directs the work of the Emergency Services Bureau;
Directs the work of the Fire Prevention Bureau;
Directs the work of the Support Services Bureau;
Directs the work of the Training Bureau;
Directs the work of the Administration Bureau;
Administers disciplinary procedures; directs, supervises, and evaluates assigned staff; handles employee concerns and problems; counsels and completes performance appraisals;
Recommends non-uniform salary adjustments;
Prepares and oversees the preparation and maintenance of comprehensive records and reports of a broad administrative and/or technical nature; prepares, reviews, and updates long-range and strategic plans;
Oversees the development and implementation of large projects for the Division of Fire;
Monitors and modifies fire programs in order to meet the changing needs of the community and the Division of Fire;
Develops and administers Division of Fire priorities and policies; advises on the development of ordinances and regulations; reviews reports of bureau activities;
Monitors preparation and administration of annual budget; recommends priorities for Capital Improvement Projects and major equipment purchases;
Ensures proper staffing of units or sections within a bureau;
Ensures proper equipment maintenance and usage; organizes and directs resources for the most efficient discharge of its duty to protect persons and property and obeys and enforces ordinances of the City of Columbus;
Attends conferences and meetings; be a spokesperson for the division; coordinates activities of the Division of Fire with that of other divisions within the City and with other governmental and private agencies and the public;
Serves as acting Fire Chief in his or her absence.
Permanent status in the class of Fire Deputy Chief or Fire Battalion Chief with the Company.
Possession of a bachelor's degree.
Possession of a valid State of Ohio motor vehicle operator's license.
Appointment consideration for current, permanent Fire Battalion Chief incumbents to this classification will be made in accordance with Section 23.5(G) of the Columbus Fire Fighters Union Local IAFF 67 contract which states:
Appointments to the Fire Assistant Chief classification will be noncompetitive and will be made from an eligible list of no more than five (5) candidates from the Fire Deputy Chief and Fire Battalion Chief ranks. Said eligible list will be comprised of all Fire Deputy Chiefs who apply for and meet the minimum qualifications for the Fire Assistant Chief classification, augmented by the number of current Fire Battalion Chiefs necessary to establish an eligible list with a total of five candidates. Fire Battalion Chiefs will be included on the eligible list if 1.) they apply for the applicable noncompetitive vacancy, 2.) they meet the Fire Assistant Chief minimum qualifications, and 3.) their current Fire Battalion Chief rank seniority, according to the Division of Fire Official Seniority Roster in effect on the first day of the filing period, is greater than the other Battalion Chief applicants who are not needed to fulfill the eligible list of five.
