The NCTA operates under cooperative agreement with the National Park Service (NPS) through the North Country National Scenic Trail (NCNST) Park Superintendent. NCTA is NPS’s major partner in developing, promoting, maintaining, and protecting the NCNST through a trail wide coalition of volunteers and partners.
As the longest of the National Scenic Trails, this 4600 mile foot path traverses the country from Vermont to North Dakota leading the walker through majestic scenery, rural beauty, and rich historic areas.
The trail is experiencing accelerating growth in use and trail awareness as it becomes better known to both local users and to distance hikers. The organization has a strong, competent, enthusiastic staff, a vibrant determined corps of volunteers, and a knowledgeable, active board of directors committed to an ambitious strategic plan. An Executive Director is sought who would revel in leading this strong group during this time of growth through the often rugged terrain of trail development, maintenance, protection, and promotion. We are seeking a candidate who demonstrates
• The ability to forge the partnerships necessary to complete, maintain, and protect the trail. The Executive Director needs to grasp the nuances and dynamics of multiple agencies and engage in productive communication.
• A thorough understanding of marketing inside and outside the outdoor community and the ability to draw national exposure to the trail.
• The ability to complete and build on the current strategic plan.
• A zest for and expertise in the political arena. Strong advocacy skills are essential. The ability to inspire others to get involved in advocacy is sought.
• Proven fundraising experience and capacity. The Executive Director needs to bring key connections and initiative in generating new revenue sources.
• The ability to stay focused on mission in an environment often overloaded with valuable stakeholder input and competing priorities.
• Strong fiscal management skills including budget development and implementation, cash flow management, long range fiscal planning, and compliance with legal and fiscal nonprofit requirements.
• Effective use of information technology
