Overview
Manage and develop the pool of Independent Contractors (ICs) for Zondervan Trade editors and Zondervan Publishing operations. Assists the Managing Editor (ME) in overseeing and managing new titles from Pub Board acceptance through editorial process management to printer ready files. Interfaces with the Trade Book Group's editorial, marketing, and creative team members as well as shared service areas of the company to support best tools, processes, and practices. Oversees the cover routing process and manages final stages of manuscript approval, ensuring editorial excellence by proofreading product packaging, front and back matter, and routings. Provides project management assistance for the Project Server tool.
Responsibilities
• Provide backup to and assist the Managing Editor (ME) in managing resources and providing accountability.
• Set up titles and maintain metadata at the request of the ME for books, audio, and eBook.
• Expand the pool of ICs by proactively sourcing new ICs, testing and evaluating their potential.
• On behalf of Acquisition Editors and Production Editors, manage the assignment (with deadlines), flow, evaluation, and payment of invoices for editorial work assigned to ICs (macro editors, content editors, copy editors, proofreaders, indexers, theological reviewers) and monitor and negotiate freelancer rates in consultation with the Editor-in-Chief.
• At the direction of the ME, support and manage project plans and revisions as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements.
• Under the supervision of the ME, maintain agenda for weekly team creative strategy meeting, scheduling titles for alignment, cover direction, and cover review to ensure that catalog deadlines are met.
• Oversee the cover routing process and manage final stages of manuscript approval, ensuring editorial excellence by proofreading product packaging, front and back matter, and cover routings.
• Manage P&L (APL) development and processing as requested by the ME.
• Perform editorial operations support tasks (format proofreading, prepress checks, small proofreading jobs), assist Production Editors working on Trade Books Publishing Group titles with editorial tasks as requested (copyright pages including updated templates and updates for all information on the copyright page, pagination guides, UPS mailing slips, sending manuscripts to print center).
• Convert manuscript files and place in Bookswip directory; field/screen all staff requests for manuscripts; and create eGalleys with appropriate disclaimers, watermarks, and password security as manuscripts become available for release.
• Manage content for endorsement and licensing needs, author requests, and media excerpts.
• Process OP, LRO, and SPR requests received from the Publisher.
• Manage the process for corrections for reprints from beginning to end.
• Assemble the CIP data and manage the entire CIP application/correction and implementation process.
• Receive/distribute advance covers received from printers and advance copies of printed books.
• At the direction of the ME, field, research, and forward as necessary queries received from Customer Service regarding Trade Books products.
• Process requests for digital copies of manuscripts, subject to the Publisher's approval.
Qualifications
Knowledge/Work Experience:Experience in publishing/editorial work preferred
Education:B.A. in English, Communications, or a related area
Industry Knowledge:General understanding of the Christian publishing industry preferred
