We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and highly organised Editorial Assistant or Assistant Editor to support the Head of Science and Society for our Scholarly programme in our London office. The ideal candidate will be commercially-aware, target-driven, energetic, and passionate about scholarly publishing.
The Editorial Assistant/Assistant Editor will provide valuable support to the Publisher and wider team, as well as building good relationships with authors, editors and reviewers, and managing day-to-day administration. There is also potential for candidates with the right level of experience to contribute to the acquisition of new titles in some defined areas of the list, as determined by the Publisher.
This role is based within the Social Science Division of Palgrave Macmillan which publishes scholarly books in Geography, Science and Technology Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Linguistics, Criminology and Education. Our mission is to publish high-quality original, peer-reviewed scholarly content for the social science academic community.
This is a fantastic opportunity for somebody wishing to take on their first role in academic publishing or for someone looking to take the next step in their editorial career. Ideally, some previous publishing experience would be advantageous for this position.
Responsibilities
• Managing editorial processes including the peer review process for new proposals
• Preparing final typescripts for handover to production
• Database management
• Writing and editing cover copy and blurbs
• A wide range of administrative tasks
• Liaising with authors as well as with colleagues in sales, marketing, production, design and editorial
• Some commissioning responsibilities for those candidates with relevant previous publishing experience
• Attendance at academic conferences as required.
Experience, skills and qualifications
• Have excellent team-working skills to deal with people within the company and externally at all levels
• Be a diplomatic and assertive individual who is able to work with demanding stake-holders
• Be able to organise and prioritise numerous tasks and be able to work on their own initiative
• Be resourceful and proactive in dealing with problems and queries
• Be able to demonstrate good publishing business awareness and the ability to learn quickly
• Have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be numerate and IT systems-literate, with a sharp eye for detail
• Preferably have at least 1 year experience working in academic publishing in an entry level editorial role
