The Director Strategy & Planning will assume a strategic role in the overall growth and success of Company’s largest operating unit (Travel Solutions revenue is ~$3.5B). Travel Solutions has two operating units: Travel Network and Airline Solutions. Travel Network operates the marketplace that allows airlines, hoteliers, and other travel providers to distribute their inventory across channels such as online and corporate travel agencies. Airline Solutions delivers the mission critical technology that allows airlines to run their core operations.
Reporting to the VP of Strategy & Planning, this position will be responsible for assisting in designing, implementing, and maintaining the long-term growth strategy for Travel Solutions and Company more broadly.
Pan-Company product strategy: Lead a team of ~12 strategy resources from across functions and business units to identify and prioritize the major product capabilities that Company will need to bring to market over the next 2 – 5 years. Develop initial hypothesis on product focus areas. Direct secondary research and interview ~50 C-level executives across key customer segments to test hypothesis. Finalize priority areas for investment and manage ~15 technology resources to scope the effort to develop capabilities. Develop commercial model framework and investment return profile. Share your recommendations with Executive Chairman, CEO, CFO, and business unit Presidents in regular Steering Committee updates while beginning to deliver proof-of-concept products in parallel.
Hotel distribution full-potential: Work closely with President of Travel Network and SVP Lodging, Ground, and Sea to deliver a recommendation on how to prioritize focus and investment to drive our hotel distribution business to reach its full-potential. Lead a team of 3 strategy resources to frame and test the impediments to the business reaching its potential. Get creative in bringing data to an opaque business by running experiments, testing ideas, and surveying customers. Identify strategic partners and run business development discussions with strategy and operational leaders outside of Company. Drive the investment and implementation plan to realize business’s full-potential.
Capital allocation: Under the RAPID decision framework the Travel Solutions Strategy team is the sole owner of the “Recommendation” on how to allocate capital across the operating unit. Balancing “Input” on near term customer needs and longer term strategic initiatives deliver investment allocation recommendation to President Travel Solutions who will “Decide” on the capital allocation.

Access and exposure: You are CEO -3 in the organization (your boss reports to President who reports to CEO. You will have frequent interactions with the most senior executives in the company and they will quickly know who you are and what you are working on.
High quality strategy and development peers including former Bain, BCG, Wachovia, and JP Morgan employees.
Limited travel: Current Director Strategy & Planning joined October 2017 and has spent <10 night away from home.
Path to P&L role: Company is hungry to identify the next generation of leaders for the company. Your access to current leadership and diversity of roles will make you a natural fit for P&L roles in the existing business units or in adjacent growth platforms.
High quality support: You will have direct reports and often will be managing cross-functional teams of 10+ individuals.
TARGET CANDIDATE PROFILE:
2 - 3 years of post-MBA experience with a top-tier strategy consulting firm
MBA from a top program required; BA/BS in an analytical field preferred
4 - 5 years of pre-MBA experience in an analytical and/or strategic function preferred
Natural curiosity to “go deep” to really understand how something works
Capability to break an issue into component pieces and drive insights against each piece in a way that the executives clear time for your meetings and “keep coming back for more”
Ability to develop mutually beneficial relationships – colleagues within the organization are saying “hi” to you in the halls and the account management teams are asking for you to meet with their customers
Capable of inspiring team members to drive to an answer and teaching them how to frame problems and drive insight; but still enjoy rolling up your sleeves and independently driving pieces of work on occasion
