The Director of Financial Planning & Analysis leads a small but integral team that supports both the centralized and decentralized elements of the College’s annual operating budget. The team also participates in long-term financial planning and special projects to support data driven decisions by the senior leadership team and the board of trustees. The Director of Financial Planning & Analysis provides essential technical and analytical skills to the Finance team as well as serving as the lead analytic/budget resource for all departments with the exception of Facilities and Campus Services which has an internal Director of Finance & Administration.
Reporting directly to the Assistant Vice President, Controller, the Director – Financial Planning & Analysis performs the following essential duties and responsibilities:
Annual Operating Budget
Manage the maintenance and use of the Tidemark budget application, including the following modules:
Provide training and support to faculty and staff charged with developing and submitting department budgets in Tidemark.
Monitor the integration of the annual budget and subsequent amendments from Tidemark to Workday and ensure that Workday reports are available to all managers with budget responsibilities and the senior staff that they report to.
Work with the Financial Analyst III and Budget Analyst to maintain and improve existing budget reports and to develop new reports as needed.
Manage the staff salary budget in Workday and the supporting position level budget in Tidemark. Work collaboratively with Human Resources to reflect all staffing changes in Tidemark. Work with the Controller and Treasurer to determine funding for the annual merit pool and any new positions and/or position reclassifications.
Manage the faculty salary budget in Workday and the supporting position level budget in Tidemark. Work collaboratively with the Academic Dean’s Office to reflect all position changes in Tidemark. Work with the Controller and Treasurer to identify potential funding shortfalls in the faculty salary pool and address them.
Work with the Financial Analyst III and Budget Analyst to provide assistance to all faculty and staff with budgetary responsibility in effectively using Workday queries and reports to manage their operating budgets and gift funds.
Expand the scope of current analysis to include metrics by functional division to support profitability reviews and the examination of resource allocation policies.
Partner with the Controller and Treasurer to develop and maintain mid and long-term financial planning tools to support capital planning, debt management and strategic planning.
Partner with the Controller and Treasurer to prepare periodic budget reports for the board of trustees as well as ad hoc reports for the senior leadership team.
Provide clear direction and oversight of all office activities in order to develop and achieve annual goals, including budgeting, planning and staff development. Responsible for monitoring and evaluating direct reports, and overall staff performance and daily assignments. Maintain an efficient, collegial, and proactive work environment within the office and collaborating departments.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in the areas of accounting, financial analysis, finance, economics, mathematics, statistics, business administration, or related field is required, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses/Certificates: A California CPA license is preferred or demonstrated equivalence with quantitative analytical skills.
Experience: A minimum of 7 years of experience with increasing responsibility in the areas of budgeting, finance, or accounting is required, with 5 years of experience in a leadership capacity, preferably from a college or university.

Ability to perform complex finance functions and activities related to budgeting and forecasting;
Thorough knowledge of financial policies, practices and systems;
Ability to synthesize large amounts of data into summary tables, graphs, and dashboards for decision-making needs at the strategic and operational levels;
Experienced in providing analytical support for complex budget, financial, or resource analysis assignments;
Must be able to prepare, articulate, and explain complex financial analysis materials in a clear, concise manner;
Handle all activities and highly confidential information with patience, discretion, good judgment, courtesy, and tact;
Prioritize and perform multiple projects/tasks, meet deadlines/timelines, respond to others in a timely manner;
Possess strong problem-solving and quantitative analytical skills to complete work with accuracy and an attention to detail;
Demonstrated ability to work with senior-level and operations staff to coordinate and implement budget allocations;
Work both independently and as a collaborative member of the college with a high standard of integrity and ethics;
Exceptional active listening skills with a strong customer service orientation to find solutions to complex problems, answer unconventional questions, and take firm action when necessary;
Advanced skills with Microsoft Office Suite along with demonstrated proficiency in Excel;
Possess a strong financial systems background with financial reporting systems, data query tools, and computer applications;
Possess an understanding of the mission of a college liberal arts environment.
The regular hours for this full time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday. Holiday, weekend and evening work hours may be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division.
