Responsibilities will include internal and external financial reporting including preparation and the analyses of policies and procedures for the implementation of new accounting standards; technical accounting research; financial modeling and forecasting; investment portfolio account management and reporting; audit coordination including timing and schedule preparation; managing and coordinating annual tax filings (including property tax exemptions, federal and state annual information returns in multiple locations and UBTI returns); preparation of tax documents, statements, and spreadsheets for review; review and process design of general ledger account reconciliations; review and approval of journal entries; creation of various monthly, quarterly and annual reports; development and implementation of accounting and other business systems [or improvements to existing systems], creation, review and updates to policies and procedures.
Implements and maintains changes to policies, procedures, and financial systems which affect the department and institution while exercising judgment within broadly defined practices and policies to engage, collaborate, and manage internal and external resources. Selects methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining long-term, strategic results in assigned functional areas and multi-year institutional projects.
Interacts with all levels including senior management and faculty. Interactions with external individuals or groups includes discussions with professionals such as appraisers, external auditors, investment managers, actuaries and other insurance professionals.
SCOPE AND COMPLEXITY
Works on problems of complex scope where analysis of situation requires evaluation of intangible factors. Drives internal compliance with regulatory standards. Ensures budgets, schedules, and performance requirements are met. Receives assignments in the form of concepts, objectives and goals.
SUPERVISION OF OTHERS
May manage or mentor accounting staff. May indirectly supervise and train non-exempt professionals, clerical, technical and administrative staff.
Requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field
Requires a minimum of 5 years of directly related cumulative and progressive responsibility and experience, of which at least two years should involve leading teams or projects
3 years of experience at a major public accounting firm
Possession of a valid CPA license is required. Must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS)
Experience reading and interpreting complex agreements, and ability to apply appropriate accounting guidance to new types of transactions
Requires experience successfully managing a team of employees
Requires the ability to effectively manage financial statements and prepare complex tax documents
Must be proficient utilizing MS Office, possess a solid working knowledge of various accounting software systems and have advanced excel skills
Requires advanced analytical and reporting skills
Ability to work with competing and shifting priorities in a matrix structure
Excellent verbal and written communications skills
Must be highly organized and able to manage multiple critical projects with various deadlines
Comfortable working in a de-centralized structure, gaining broad support for initiatives, and making progress when formal guidance may not exist
