California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB), is a public university established in 1965. It is one of the 23 campuses of the California State University system, the largest system of higher education in the country, with 417,000 students, 22,000 faculty members, and 1,800 degree programs in 240 subject areas. With a rapidly growing enrollment that now exceeds 20,000, the CSUSB campus is scenically located in suburban San Bernardino, with a branch campus in Palm Desert. The University offers 138 bachelor's degrees, 67 master's degrees, one doctoral degree and 23 teaching credentials. CSUSB's ten sports teams – men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, women's volleyball, baseball, softball, women's cross country, women's track and field, and men's golf - known as the Coyotes, are members of Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and compete in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Coyote teams have won 22 CCAA championships, 22 Player of the Year honors, 19 Coach of the Year honors, more than 500 individual awards, and 13 NCAA Regional Championships.
The Position
Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Athletics Director is a member of the Division of Student Affairs Senior Management Team and a larger leadership team that includes Student Affairs Directors and the University's Administrative Council. The position directs and administers intercollegiate athletics on behalf of CSUSB and provides quality educational and student athletic experiences as part of a comprehensive effort to foster student-athletes' success. The position is responsible for planning, directing and coordinating a comprehensive athletics program for both men and women, providing leadership to a staff of 36, and overseeing a budget of 3.9 million. The Athletics Director is expected to work in collaboration with University Advancement to ensure fundraising goals are established and met, to promote and market programs, and to develop funding initiatives for scholarships, innovative programs, and facilities. The new Athletics Director will also be responsible for all membership obligations, representations and advocacies with the NCAA Division II and the CCAA Conference and will chair the Intercollegiate Athletics Advisory Committee (IAAC). CSUSB boasts an attractive, versatile, 5,000-seat arena that provides an excellent competition and practice venue for the indoor sports, as well as related fan and booster affinity cultivation, and a plan has recently been initiated for the renovation of the outdoor playing and practice venues.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess a master's degree with a minimum of five years' progressive leadership experience in intercollegiate athletics administration, ideally at the NCAA Division II level, a commitment to academic achievement of student-athletes, and an ability to lead both men's and women's programs. The new Director will possess strong leadership and promotional skills, along with the ability to build effective community, alumni, and campus support within ethnically diverse Southern California. The Director must possess analytical, problem-solving and organizational skills and a thorough knowledge and understanding of the principles, practices, and procedures of program development and management. The new Director will ideally possess, or need to immediately gain knowledge of, the California Education Code and the related laws which affect the CSU system. The ability to work creatively and independently, along with the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, and the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships will be important in the selection of the new Director.
