The NCI is seeking an innovative leader to serve as Director of its extramural Division of Cancer Biology (DCB). The position is in the Office of the Director (OD), National Cancer Institute (NCI), located in Bethesda, MD and reports directly to the NCI Director.
The mission of DCB is to advance cancer research by providing funding support through grants and programs for research that investigates the basic biology of cancer at academic, non-profit and for-profit institutions across the United States. Through its funding programs, DCB supports and ensures continuity and stability in basic cancer research while encouraging and facilitating the emergence of new ideas, concepts, and technologies. The DCB portfolio is exceptionally broad, covering all research fields of basic cancer biology, including fundamental cellular mechanisms of cancer biology, the transformation of normal Companies to cancer Companies, and the metastasis of cancer Companies. Research supported by DCB provides the foundation for new treatments, clinical trials, and improved understanding of the disease. These goals of the DCB are implemented through extramural grants, cooperative agreements, collaborative projects, and other activities. The Division Director is the scientific and administrative leader of the DCB. S/he provides scientific expertise and a strategic vision for the DCB portfolio, including identification of emerging new directions for basic cancer research, support of novel technologies, and development of collaborative programs with other NCI extramural divisions and NIH Institutes. The Division Director also oversees all administrative operations of the DCB including its budget. The Division Director has responsibility for: (1) scientific planning and strategy; (2) operational administration of the division; (3) oversight of all the division’s grants and cooperative agreement research activities amounting to over 2000 grants and $800 million annually; and, (4) working with and advising NCI senior leadership on the development and implementation of long-range strategic, scientific, facility and business plans for the division. The Director of DCB oversees a staff of approximately 60 scientific and administrative staff organized in six separate but highly interactive branches within DCB.
