Golder has a new opportunity for an intermediate to senior level Dam Safety Engineer to support our engineering projects in any of our Great Lakes offices. Other locations may be considered, depending on the experience of the candidate.
The ideal candidate will be a Professional Engineer with a strong background in civil, structural, hydrological and/or geotechnical aspects of dam safety engineering and design. The selected candidate will be responsible for the review and coordination of new and remedial designs, foundation improvements, structural analyses, and hydrologic and hydraulic studies, as they relate to dam safety. This professional will also support analysis and design work for new and existing dams and water resource facilities.
This position will have the opportunity to work alongside consultants from various disciplines on exciting and challenging projects locally and around the world and will work directly with our clients, so the preferred candidate will have client and regulatory experience.
Responsibilities of the role will include:
Perform FERC Part 12D inspections for dam safety related work, including annual operation inspections;
Develop and oversee dam safety related geotechnical evaluations of dams, monitoring and testing programs, and analysis of results;
Oversee reporting including FERC required DSSMRs, ODSPs and STI documents;
Management of clients, projects, deliverables, proposal writing, cost estimating, scheduling;
Manage the progress and development of remedial designs of earth and rock fill embankment dams, concrete gravity dams, and various other water-impounding structures;
Assist in subcontractor selection, qualification and management;
Provide dam safety training to junior staff and clients;
Report and present findings to and training to elected utility Boards;
Undertake project-based travel and site work, both within the USA and internationally. The frequency and duration of this will depend on business and client needs;
Lead report preparation, able to prepare or direct completion of technical documents including descriptions of investigations, results, conclusions and recommendations for review by senior staff;
Participate in Business Development (BD) activities including preparing or providing input to proposals, participating in trade shows and conferences;
Display a ‘safety first’ attitude, promoting positive health and safety, raising safety issues through the appropriate channels and adhering to Company health and safety policy and procedures.
Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, or Geotechnical Engineering required. Master’s in Science is preferable.
5+ years of demonstrable experience which includes FERC Part 12, dam safety evaluations, and dam engineering design and analysis.
Professional Engineering registration (PE) is preferred or the ability to obtain it within a year.
Proficient with design software (e.g. GeoStudio (SLOPE/W, etc.), Rocscience, AllPile, and/or HEC-RAS, AutoCAD and ArcGIS software.
Ability to work independently and make decisions with input and review from senior staff;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with experience writing technical reports and project proposals.
Strong organizational skills with project management capabilities.
Confident in managing professional relationships including liaison with clients.
