Responsible for routing, sizing, preparation and approval, activation, installation, splicing knowledge of coax and expert understanding of fiber optic distribution systems and equipment in a manner that ensures company technical requirements are adhered to, thereby ensuring minimal customer interruptions during the new build/rebuild phase through high level operational efficiency. Position serves as a conduit for delivery of new products to the customer. Ensures individual and crew compliance with vehicle, safety, OSHA, National Electrical Safety Code and Building Officials Code Administration. Valid States Driver’s License within State of Employment with CDL where applicable
Provides quality internal and external customer service surrounding company values
Proficient in fiber optic splicing and troubleshooting
Performs quality service documentation of optical links
Contributes in commercial and residential quotes and BoM creations
Works on cable plant installation, splicing, trenching, and back filling construction projects
Operates a jackhammer, compressor power equipment, backhoe, and boring equipment in a buried system
Loads and operates the lasher, ties off lashing wire, drills holes, uses hardware to attach cable strands, and prepares system for splicing
Completes construction work on CATV system design prints
Maintains construction equipment in proper working order
Performs responsibilities of Construction Technician I & II as necessary
Assists in pre-wiring and installation activities
Digs trenches and removes soil prior to cable installation in a buried system
Pulls lasher, strand or cable between poles
Supplies crewmembers with necessary tools and hardware
Plans daily activity, requisitions equipment and supplies, and stocks vehicle
Completes job documentation on paper or by using a computer
Resolves or escalates customer complaints
Uses small hand tools, power tools, meters and other test equipment
Operates a bucket truck
Maintains and secures Company truck and equipment
Works on regularly scheduled days as well as unscheduled days and beyond regular work hours as required
Mentors and coaches of Construction Technician I level techs as necessary
Performs other duties as assigned
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Ability to communicate in person and by telephone
Vision ability: close vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus; ability to differentiate between different sizes and colors of wires
Hand and finger dexterity to carry and to use tools and equipment as necessary
Ability to work while standing 50 - 70% of the time
Ability to use any equipment in a safe manner, in accordance with company, industry and regulatory standards
Ability to safely lift 75 pounds
Ability to carry, climb and operate extension ladder, (approx. 28 ft high and 75 pounds). Accommodation with 50-pound maximum lifting is available.
Ability to climb poles using gaffs, hooks and climbing belt (weight limit of 350 pounds) as needed
Ability to work in confined spaces by crawling, bending, reaching, twisting
Ability to drive Company vehicle in a safe and responsible manner
High school diploma or equivalent
Knowledge of basic mathematics
Must possess current DOT (Department of Transportation) medical card and valid CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) where applicable; must comply with all applicable DOT requirements
12 to 18 months experience working as a Construction Tech II or 3 to 4 years OSP experience.
Good written and oral communications skills.
Knowledge of all mdu, aerial, underground and BA construction materials and equipment, related hand tools, including technical familiarity with CATV system plant components and home wiring.
Knowledge of aerial and underground construction procedures and specifications.
Knowledge of mdu and B/A construction procedures and specifications.
Knowledge of grounding and bonding specifications as necessary.
Knowledge of the complete usage of underground locating equipment. (UG Locator, TDR, Line Toner)
Knowledge of basic test equipment. (RF Meter, Volt/OHM meter)
Knowledge of basic design calculations.
Knowledge of contractor specifications and billing procedures.
Knowledge of complete safety precautions.
Knowledge of light computer skills.
Ability to read maps. (Road and Systems)
Ability to operate and maintain vehicles.
Ability to work in all weather conditions.
Willingness to work standby and overtime as needed. Includes emergency storm duty.
Knowledge of basic electronics
Skill in using a Windows-based computer
Ability to comprehend and operate appropriate testing equipment (e.g. signal level meters, ohm meters)
Ability to prioritize and organize effectively
Ability to work independently and with others
Appropriate valid driver’s license and driving record within Company standards
Bi-lingual proficiency preferred in some locations
