Direct efforts related to Major League Baseball’s Community Affairs mission. An integral player in the strategic business operations, the Director of Community Affairs works with all internal MLB departments and key external stakeholders to position the organization as a “valued corporate citizen.” The Director ensures that MLB is proactively responsive to critical community issues and needs while maintaining a visible and positive community presence.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Central Office
• Direct the implementation of an annual plan of objectives and activities for community relations based on Major League Baseball's goals and objectives.
• Work with Advertising/Marketing/Corporate Sales departments to develop, implement maintain and evolve cause-related marketing efforts that engage sponsors and are run in conjunction with league charitable partners
• Make programmatic recommendations, including, but not limited to, policy and action recommendations following natural disasters and other tragedies
• Analyze current business practices with regard to service and productivity, to enhance company revenue by securing repeat business from existing vendors/business partners through partnering in community initiatives
• Work with in - house counsel, develop and review agreements and contracts
• Plan league –wide charitable ticket programs, and conduct oversight of same, ensuring compliance with distribution and redemption goals and protocols
• Manage corporate contributions financial and in-kind contributions to charitable organizations
• Oversee social media, web content, calendars and other communication materials , including but not limited to the development and production of internal and external Community publications, newsletters, handbooks and brochures
• Establish measurement criteria to assess department performance in relation to established goals and recommend new approaches, policies and procedures to effect continual improvement in services
• Direct various personnel functions including but not limited to hiring, merit recommendations and promotions
Club and Player Interface
• Serve as liaison to club Community Affairs Departments
• Work with the Club Community and Foundation Directors to promote projects and activities regarding league wide Community Affairs programs
• Where appropriate maintain relations between MLBPA and MLBPAA
Community Involvement
• Liaison between MLB and community civic leaders/ government. Keep informed of developments in the field of Community Affairs and maintains contact with community and business groups
• Directs department and local communities with creating and sustaining MLB's community outreach programs
• Responsible for translating league initiatives to the local level including directing community relations outreach program evaluation
Perform other related duties incidental to all work described herein
EXPERIENCE/SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelors Degree or substitutable background in Public or Media relations, marketing or advertising, communications or journalism
• Minimum of 7 years of proven ability to create and sustain and manage effective community programs
• Minimum of 5 years working for professional sports teams or leagues strongly preferred
• Prior successful experience managing staff
• Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
• Experienced presenter/outreach to community groups
• Demonstrated ability in analysis, planning, coordination, promotions and data management
• Ability to work cooperatively with Clubs, public and private sector constituencies, advocacy groups and players, fans and the media
• Ability to perform research and conduct oral and written presentations
• Ability to perform a broad range of supervisory responsibilities
• Knowledge of community programs and organizations, methods involved in developing community relations programs, and inter-group dynamics and conflict resolution
• Knowledge of social media and emerging technologies
• Ability to multi-task
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
• Diplomatic and interpersonal skills
